English
English is taught every morning except Friday for 2 hours.
This involves the three main areas of reading, writing and talking and
listening using some aspects of the Reading to Learn (R2L) program. Talking and Listening is
involved in all classroom activities as well as specifically in Literacy times. English is taught within our own classroom with themes
usually being based on the current HSIE topic.
Spelling is completed four times a week with a focus on a sound/ letter combination per week. A test is completed on Friday.
Writing is taught through modelling and rewriting texts we are currently looking at. Students are encouraged to look at different aspects of their writing each time they write.
Reading is completed as a whole class by completing ‘Detailed Reads’ as well as in Reading groups where students read a set text and then complete activities associated with their reading. There are five reading groups which cycle through four/ five activities each week. The teacher listens to each group read once per week.
